Dashboards and Admin Tools Designs
These are two of the projects I worked on during the summer of 2021. For one I created a dashboard containing several widgets for data lookup, collection, and visualization. For the second I created an admin dashboard to visualize relevant data and three administrator utilities for data management. All designs/prototypes were created completely in Figma.
Project 1: Data Visualization and Lookup Dashboard
Early Stages
-
Met with product owner to understand the purpose of the project and the identity of the users
-
The kind of data collection and reporting and their uses for the user were all completely new to me and technical so I took time to conduct my own research and carefully examine the project brief.
-
The project brief contained information primarily concerned the backend of the product, and this was mainly what the owner talked about as well. I used the breakdown of the backend to inform how the dashboard could work best for users.
-
Using this information I considered initial user flows and brainstormed initial wireframes:
Further User Research and Iteration
After brainstorming initial designs, I considered what else might be useful for users and proposed the addition of a few functions to the dashboard to the owner to see if they agreed on user benefit. After receiving approval for these, I iterated on what I had put together during my brainstorming sessions.
My main focus when designing the screens for this were:
1. Ease of use for the user
2. Clear, consistent, and useful data visualization
3. Interactivity and functionality
Final Feedback and Polish
I received final feedback on this and related screens and then worked on creating a final, polished, clickable prototype.
My main focuses for the final iteration of this project were improving the look of the UI, improving clarity of visualizations, and adding interactivity through the use of actions like clicking, hovering, exporting, and searching.
Project 2: Admin Tools and Dashboard
Process and Development
-
Met with product owner to over requirements and plan for backend development
-
Similar to the previous project, the product usage was quite technical and required me to learn through the product owner, brief document, and some personal research in order to accurately gauge user needs.
-
-
Shorter timeline, but had the advantage of having worked on the previous project right before this and was asked to use a similar style for this one
-
Two user types, authorized user and admin
-
Authorized users just needed simple data query to see if things were safe or not
-
Admin needed tools for advanced metadata editing, file uploads, and observing reports and trend analyses
-
For this project, there was a large focus on creating simple yet sufficient utilities and a dashboard purely used for data visualization and trend analysis for administrators.
